Altos de Chavón is one-of-a-kind
Altos de Chavón is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting not only Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, but the Dominican Republic in general. This charming place is a replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village built in the 1970s, and it quickly became a popular tourist destination due to its unique beauty and cultural significance.
Chavón’s attractions offer a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Dominican Republic, and also provide an opportunity to shop, dine, and relax. For those visiting at their own pace, we suggest the following itinerary to make the most out of your day:
Morning:
Probably you just played an early round of golf at the majestic Dye Fore or just stayed a few extra minutes in your bed. Either way, when you arrive at Altos de Chavón, start your route on the Amphitheater, home of many world-class concerts since 1982. We challenge you to go down the 30 stairs and take a selfie on the main stage. After that, grab a cup of coffee and a pastry at the nearby Voalá Café.
After that, go to the fountain to check out the views. If you happen to visit on the last Saturday of the month, you’ll stumble upon the Farmer’s Market. There you can discover local sellers with a variety of fresh produce, organic products, international food, handmade accessories, and artisanal crafts.
Afternoon:
For lunch, Altos de Chavón has options for all tastes. You can try authentic, street-style Mexican food at Chilango Taquería. After that, stroll through many shops such as La Tienda Gift Shop, Jenny Polanco, Everett Designs, and Cabinet Tobacco Boutique to find the next treasure to take back home.
To soak up the artistic side of Altos de Chavón, you can choose between taking pottery classes at a real artisan workshop or visiting the Altos de Chavón Archaeological Museum to learn about the Taino indigenous culture that inhabited the island on pre-Columbian times. You can also check WAO Galería, a contemporary art gallery with frequent exhibits by Dominican and Latin American artists.
When the time is right, head to the main plaza near the St. Stanislaus Church to view the colors of the sunset over the Chavón River, and then stay for the lively ambiance.
Night:
Time to grab cocktails! There are many options for Happy Hours and bites to share such as the newly-opened Alegría, the well-established Onno’s Bar, or the cheerful Café Marietta. For a romantic Italian dinner, make a reservation at La Piazzetta. If you’re feeling energized, close the night dancing at Genesis Nightclub.
P.S.: We can’t forget the most important tip: wear sneakers or comfortable shoes!
